Ode to a Grecian Vacation

Turquoise sea, a flagrant moon

no dream adrift, content within

to swoon, we speak not of Roman

Wars, of gods that lust for power

but Greek imaginings that toward beauty

soar, where human delight seeks divine

Wisdom, radiance not to be deities

that shine with artillery, medals, soldiers entwined

to impose control with stoic sacrifice — no!

Our Greek excess would fĂȘte what is true

within you, renounce control of State

belligerent with hate. In its stead, behold

Beauty, craft, wisdom sure as donkey feet

on mountain paths endure, like steady hands

on fishing lines, and these few words in kind.

Turquoise sea, a flagrant moon

no dream adrift, content within

to swoon, in art and love its omen.
